Did I mention I'm a winner?

I've been reading through my new book The Vegetable Gardener's Bible.  I really want to try some of his idea's.  However it is going to have to dry up before I can get anything done.

Update on Potato planting

As you can see my friend has potatoes laying around on the ground. When we left the other day they were snug in their little hay bed. I suspect some little four legged creature came along and decided to more them. Maybe planting them in a bed of hay wasn't such a good idea.

Mine, however, are still buried in the dirt just waiting for warmer days.

Can you see the shallots? I didn't expect them to look so different from the onions. Of course, you have to look past the weeds.

We've had some rain and the garden really looks nice. Now I'm just waiting for a few more warm days to get some of my other seeds in the ground.

Onions for Valentine's Day?

Yes, Onions for Valentine's Day. According to my extension agent onions should be in the ground Valentine's Day weekend. You can find your own garden planing guide here. The actual planning guide states that you have from February 15 to March 10 to get them in the ground. I guess I should start looking for my onion sets. Have you seen any?

Well it's time to get started again.

I vaguely remember my extension agent saying that "nothing says love like onions." What he means is that I have to have my onions in the ground by Valentine's Day. Take a look at the garden now. Of course it looks much better than it did this time last year. I have 22 days. Think I'll make it?

I've fallen and I can't get up!

Okay I know that is old, but it still fits. They started to fall over, now I'm just waiting for the right time to harvest. I know my extension agent told me to wait a few days. Of course I can't find my notes so I don't know exactly how many days. I'll let you know when I know.

Onions, Onions everywhere

They certainly have shapped up. Look at them now.

I'm waiting for the greens to fall over and then we'll harvest them. But where will I keep them?

We're having fun now!

Finally, the onions are in the ground. They should have been in the ground on Valentine's day, but we couldn't get them in until Monday, February 25. They seem kind of scraggly (is that a word?) but they'll shape up. Right?

The next picture is our source of water. Such clear pretty water......LOL. Aren't we going to have fun!

And then carrying the water up the hill to the garden.

At last, the onions get a nice cool drink.

It is going to be a lot of work, but we don't mind getting dirty. Mostly, we're just happy being on my Grandpa's farm. It is our favorite place to be!

Later in the day my cousin dropped by and we went to watch him fish. He did catch a nice bass that weighted in around 3 pounds. Lucky for us, he slipped him back into the pond so we could try our luck catching him again.
